Abstract
Purpose:
In order to look at the prevalence of debuted oral complications such as vesicles, ulcers and infections of candidasis, a comparison between the effect of normal saline solution (0.9%) and chlorhexidine (CHX) (0.1%) as a prophylactic method of mouthwash (used as a supplement to other oral hygiene measures) was studied in children receiving medical treatment for acute leukemia.
Methods:
The study included 15 children randomly assigned to two groups (saline, n=7, CHX, n=8) Registration-schedule and existing sources of data were used. Registration was performed when the patients were at Rikshospitalet, the National Hospital, Oslo, Norway, during the time from induction until maintenance of the medical treatment.
Findings/conclusion:
A Significant difference was found between the groups in the number of debuted vesicles, where the number of vesicles was lowest in the saline group. There was a tendency in difference between the groups in the number of debuted infections of candidiasis, where the number was lowest in the saline group. No significant difference was found between the groups in the number of ulcers.
