Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze mentalities in nurse education. The Swedish Red Cross College of Nursing and Health is used as an example. Data has been collected from nursing literature, archives and from delibarations. Data has also been improved by interviews with twelve nurses, educated between 1940–1990.
Both delibarations and literature give information about what has been important. One important point has been to give more knowledge. It was also important to teach the student to behave in a certain way. There were many rules for how the students should treat the patients and many advice about what kind of personality she should have. The nurses who were interviewed talked about these rules.
There weir two different themes in nurse education. One was about dependence and dependence of the doctors. The other was a clear search for independence. This independence can be developed by research but it is important to know the history.
