Resources among New Mothers — Early Discharged Multiparous Women

Abstract

The aim of this qualitative, explorative study was to investigate multiparous women's resources, expectations and experiences around childbirth. The study was triggered by the political decision of compulsory outpatient deliveries for uncomplicated multiparous women in Denmark, and demands for quality development of postpartum nursing care. A convenience sample of seven women was interviewed twice, a month before and a month after the delivery. Data were analysed following Gadamer's hermeneutical methodology. The findings revealed that the participating women had plenty of resources, were well prepared through earlier experiences and literature, and had extensive social networks. However, they hesitated to use their social network for practical help such as temporary care-taking of their older children during the postpartum period. Findings also revealed that the nursing during the few hours' stay at the maternity unit was fragmented and rest at home after dismissal from the hospital was minimal. The challenge for practice is to help multiparous women identify their resources and reestablish rest periods at home. The idea of a maternity patient hotel for postpartum rest is also discussed.
