Abstract
Theories of civil-military relations have been drawn largely from societies that are both industrialized and Western. Study of civil-milit relations in ird World societies illustrates the significance of both "'ltfcafcultiireand participai in politics as key factors determining the arm al role T p s are discussed with reference to Confucian ideals, to Latin American concepts of the legitimacy of military participation in decision-making, and to guerrilla warfare and mass mobilization.
