Abstract
A new polymer has been developed with extraordinary heat, oxidation and chemical resistance for a hydrocarbon elastomer. The polymer, based on a controlled brominated derivative of poly (isobutylene-co-paramethyl styrene), is completely saturated with low levels of benzylic bromides for functionality important to vulcanization and chemical activity for adhesion and other functional modifications.
This paper will describe several mining applications where the unique attributes of this new polymer system enhanced performances in mining operations. Innerliners based on the new polymer in OTR tires for open mining vehicular operations give vastly improved heat/flex resistance in prolonging the life of the expensive, large OTR tires. Conveyor belting performance will benefit from use of the new polymer in prolonged operations where flex and heat resistance are important especially in composite constructions. Other applications will be described demonstrating the latitude in properties capable with the new polymer system.
