High abrasion furnace black (HAF) was added to controlled release styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) formulations, in order to control the release rate of the bioactive material (CuSO4.H2O). The higher the amount of carbon black, the lower is the release rate of the bioactive material. The in vestigated formulations showed copper ions being leached according to the fol lowing order: Formulation No. 1 > 2 >> 3 ≥ 4 > 5 Increasing the amount of carbon black also improves the physicomechanical properties of the vulcanizate.
