Abstract
In recent years sports shoes have developed into highly complex and spe cialized items of sporting equipment. They are designed to help athletes maxi mize their performances, while at the same time providing protection from in jury (including delayed and secondary injuries caused by excessive strain). In this respect particular importance attaches to the soles of the shoes, which must be able to offer the full range of properties required to meet the demands of various types of sport.
