Abstract
An attempt was made to prepare UV-Vacuum-heat resistant polymer foam blends for external and internal applications of spacecraft. The method of prep aration deals with preblending the incompatible thermosetting (phenol formalde hyde resin, PF) and thermoplastic (PMMA/PS) polymers in the presence of a compatibilizer and converting into foams. Three compatibilizers, viz, Poly(phenol formaldehyde-s-triazine-methyl methacrylate)-P(PF-g-MMA), Poly(phenol formaldehyde-s-triazine-styrene)-P(PF-g-S) and Poly(cinnamaldehyde-co-un saturated copolyester)-P(C-g-E) were used. A set of PF-PMMA blend foams viz, PF/PMMA/P(C-g-E) and PF/PMMA/P(PF-g-MMA) and another set of PF-PS blends viz PF/PS/P(C-g-E) and PF/PS/P(PF-g-S) were prepared. The mixing of PF and PMMA/PS was investigated by tensile testing. The effect of cer tain additives on the foam morphology was discussed.
