Abstract
This paper describes the utility of SMC in structural grade applications, more particularly, in GM truck cabs. The material chosen by GM was fiber glass reinforced, calcium carbonate filled commercially available SMC resin. Field tests to date on completely assembled truck cabs have been favorable. Based on the observed property retention of the resin with respect to temperature variation and cyclic loading, as well as resistance to stress crazing, the establish ment of structural grade SMC as a thoroughly effective substitute for metals is fully expected when all testing is com pleted.
