Abstract
Caterpillar uses polyurethane materials in hydraulic seals, struts, track adjusters, arm rests, and other parts. Implementation of this material type would have been speeded had uniform physical testing procedures been available. Rapid acceptance was further hampered by raw materials supplier companies which tended to oversimplify test data, tending to lead end-user companies such as Caterpillar to make wrong assumptions. Specifications for urethanes were eventually developed based on Cateipillar usage requirements. As hydraulic pressures go higher, loads increase, and weights de creased, these screening tests will be useful guides in developing new formulations.
