Abstract
This article describes the various types of silicone rubbers available, such as heat vulcanized, two-part RTV, one-component RTV. Silicone rubbers' unique physical properties come into play at either very high or very low temperatures. Automotive applications include pump seals, diaphragms, spark plug covers, carburetor check valves, radiator hoses, window hinges, gaskets, etc. Two factors influencing increased use of silicone rubber in the auto motive industry are higher operating temperatures caused by higher performance engines, and more emphasis on reliability resulting from extended warranties.
