Close observation indicates that a very substantial number of reported adhesive failures in elastomeric pavement joint sealants are actually the result of concrete failure by spalling. This spalling can be reduced by more careful protection and preparation of the substrate. This paper is a critical evaluation of past performance with close examination of reasons for failures and design proposals for improved performance, resulting in superior, long range concrete paving performance.
