The Interplay of Rentierism,Homicides,and Deforestation: Systems of Violence in Colombia Post 2016

Abstract

This article addresses core causes of violence in Colombia in addition to the political economy of violence. It examines the rentier economy and the new structure of the evolving system of violence following the signing of the Peace Accord in 2016 between the state and the FARC, the largest and oldest peasant-based guerrilla movement in Latin America. The subject of analysis includes the illicit activity of new actors, such as the FARC dissident groups and older actors such as the ELN, and its impact on deforestation and peasant dislocation.

Este artículo aborda las causas fundamentales de la violencia en Colombia, así como la economía política de la violencia. Examina la economía rentista y la nueva estructura del sistema de violencia en evolución tras la firma del Acuerdo de Paz en 2016 entre el Estado y las FARC, la guerrilla de base campesina más grande y antigua de América Latina. El análisis considera tanto la actividad ilícita de nuevos actores, como los grupos disidentes de las FARC, como la de actores más antiguos, como el ELN, así como su impacto en la deforestación y el desplazamiento campesino.
