Paulus and Dzindolet (1993) presented evidence that they argued supports a two-component model of the effects of incarceration. Prison life, in their model, includes both constancy and variability, with each of these components having different effects on the individual. However, the separation of these two components at the theoretical and methodological levels is problematic. We conclude that their data can just as readily support other theoretical accounts of the effects of imprisonment without facing the difficulties posed by the two-component model.
