Abstract
The context for the development of the journal Criminal Justice and Behavior is described in terms of its predecessor publications and the zeitgeist of the time. Decisions were made in terms of international aspirations. Examination of the first volume identified article topics that have continued to draw attention 50 years later. The journal has morphed from a general emphasis on psychology and justice to a broader criminal justice focus, a shift that is seen as positive and consistent with the field differentiating into general and specialty journals.
