Abstract
A significant number of lawyers experience such a high level of distress at work that it damages their physical and mental health, as well as their ability to represent clients. This article introduces a conceptual model designed to understand, evaluate and improve the condition of lawyers through a multidisciplinary approach that involves the expertise of both legal and mental health researchers. The model is used as a framework for a literature review on what is known about the stressors that affect lawyers and for an examination of the consequences that such stressors have on lawyers, litigants and the legal system. In addition, a number of individual and systemic intervention strategies are proposed to prevent, reduce and treat distress among lawyers.
