Abstract
This model for a child psychiatry custody study is a form of divorce counseling adapted to the procedures of the legal system. Each legal step is seen as part of an ongoing developmental experience for affected children and their parents. Based upon the request of a judge or guardian ad litem, the study brings the diagnostic and therapeutic skills of child psychiatry to bear upon the child-centered crises and decisions accompanying divorce. Criteria are described for matching parental capacities and the developmental needs of a child. The counseling component of the study aims to help parents achieve a working relationship as mother and father of their children during and after divorce. The diagnostic component provides the parents, and courts, with data for making decisions regarding custody and visitation arrangements.
