Abstract
Selected mental hospital patients are permitted to leave the premises for varying lengths of time. Such passes provide diagnostic data, therapeutic benefits and potential legal risks. Courts balance the rights of the individual against those of the community by applying the traditional rules of negligence in establishing liability.
