Abstract
The following remarks were delivered by Jay Katz at the First Annual Symposium on Legal and Ethical Issues in Psychiatric Practice held by the New York University Center on Forensic Psychiatry in 1974. The audience was composed of psychiatric residents, staff psychiatrists, and other health professionals from throughout the New York area. At our request, Dr. Katz has kindly appended a list of citations and other sources. For readers who wish to learn more about Dr. Katz’ work in informed consent, we recommend the following books written by him: Experimentation with Human Beings and (with Alexander M. Capron) Catastrophic Diseases–-Who Decides What? Dr. Katz is now at work on a book about informed consent in the therapeutic setting.
