Abstract
After noting some of the faults of plea bargaining, this article stresses the considerable guilt that besets mankind, details how confessions, particularly, may be related to this guilt, and emphasizes the fact that implicit in every plea bargain is a confession. The hypothesis is advanced that plea bargaining is proliferating because it helps significantly to lighten man's burden of guilt.
