Abstract
In Sell v. U.S. (2003), the Supreme Court ruled that a trial court must make certain findings before authorizing the involuntary administration of antipsychotic medication for the sole purpose of rendering a nondangerous mentally ill defendant competent to stand trial. Unfortunately, the language of the Sell decision left many issues unclear. The present article highlights the areas of confusion and reviews the subsequent federal court decisions related to these areas.
