Abstract
The polygraph, a widely used tool in the field of law enforcement, is frequently touted as being able to detect truthfulness and/or deception of suspects, victims, witnesses, and informants. However, the tool is highly misunderstood, as it is often referred to as a lie detector. The role of the examiner is critical in both administration and interpretation of results. This article discusses the foundations of the polygraph in terms of physiological processes, as well as the psychological processes that can occur for a person undergoing a polygraph examination. A brief history of the polygraph is presented along with the different types of polygraph examinations and methods of questioning as well as the general science of the polygraph, its effectiveness, processes, proper use, and measures.
