Abstract
Clinical trials (CTs) are increasing worldwide due to the implementation of evidence-based medicine, the establishment of an international guideline for CTs, and the increasing number of pharmaceutical CTs. In three independent studies on clinical trial research practice in Hong Kong it was found that: 1. Randomized CTs represented approximately 3% of the clinical academic output in Hong Kong during the last decade, 2. There is a knowledge deficit in Good Clinical Practice among investigators and research associates, 3. There are many clinical trials currently underway, and 4. There is a strong demand for training programs in CT research methodology. In conclusion, there is a strong trend toward using CT research designs and conducting pharmaceutical trials in Hong Kong, which has high academic output. This trend is further emphasized by the fact that many international pharmaceutical companies are represented in Hong Kong.
