Abstract
The field of osteoporosis is rapidly changing. Furthermore, bone density reports are confusing and inconsistent in nomenclature, method of interpretation, and clinical correlation. A curriculum for primary care health care providers is presented to enable them to take a minimally interpreted bone density study and a risk assessment questionnaire to create a treatment plan. This half day program teaches the health care provider, utilizing a didactic and hands-on program, about bone biology and bone pathology. The participants participate in scanning sessions utilizing a LUNAR dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) bone density machine. They learn treatment and prevention modalities of osteoporosis. Furthermore, they learn how to interpret a minimally interpreted bone density study. Utilizing the bone density study and a risk assessment questionnaire, they are taught how to create a clinical treatment plan for osteoporosis for their patients.
