Abstract
This paper points out the importance of on-the-job training for pharmaceutical statisticians. The training discussed in this paper is not restricted to the continuous improvement of one's technical skills but contains many nontechnical dimensions. Why skillssuch as project-specific knowledge, verbal and written communication, and organizational and leadership skills can be best acquired on the job through a well thought-out training plan with management's support is explained. It is argued that without engaging in outreach activities and avoiding the inward focus, it is hard for pharmaceutical statisticians to reach their maximum effectiveness and win their proper place in the drug development effort.
