This paper provides an overview of the University Hospital Consortium (UHC) and the reason that pharmacoeconomic data are becoming increasingly important to UHC members. Selected points raised by speakers at the DIA Workshop “Cost-Effectiveness Analysis: Measures and Methods in Clinical Trials” will be covered. Comments will be framed relative to hospitals' increasing need for pharmacoeconomic information and UHC's active interest in partnering with industry to develop more useful information so that the clinical enterprises in academic health centers can be better run businesses.
