Abstract
This paper discusses drug monitoring in Latin America. Costa Rica was the first country to attempt drug monitoring, initiating a plan in 1985 based on the guidelines of the World Health Organisation. Other Latin American countries—El Salvador, Ecuador, Panamá, and Guatemala—are in various stages of developing drug monitoring programs, based on Costa Rica's program. Regional programs are also under development.
