Abstract
This paper reviews the initiation of good laboratory practice (GLP) monitoring activities, its development to date, and its anticipated future development. The trend from general inspections toward study audits of pivotal studies, and its effects on international harmonization efforts, are covered. Advantages and disadvantages of study audits instead of general inspections are outlined.
