Abstract
In April 1993, the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW) implemented an official guideline on good postmarketing surveillance (PMS) practice. This paper outlines the guideline, which calls for the establishment of a PMS department within each pharmaceutical company and enables the MHW to conduct inspections. The paper concludes by outlining ideal PMS and the measures that must be taken to achieve it.
