Abstract
Early Japanese experience with Western contract research organizations (CRO) was full of problems, leading many Japanese pharmaceutical companies to establish their own CROs. As the industry globalizes, there are new opportunities for Western CROs to work with Japanese companies on new drug development. This paper describes the state of the Japanese pharmaceutical industry and the ways in which CROs can be of use.
