Abstract
The clinical database at Searle is located centrally on a VAX 6450 situated in Skokie, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. A data processing system, based on the S1032 DBMS, has been developed in-house. All study databases are set up in the United States. Remote sites enter data locally and then transmit them to the central database. Processing work proceeds on the central computer to which the remote sites have direct access.
This paper describes the hardware and software used during data processing and the personnel employed in the United States and the United Kingdom to perform such tasks. An overview of data processing operating procedures is provided and the advantages and disadvantages of operating such a system are discussed.
