The parameters required to allow meaningful in vitro testing methods to be developed are illustrated on the basis of tablets, coated tablets, and capsules. The quantities of drug released are correlated with those measured in the blood. Correlated product specifications are derived from this for in vitro testing; these allow reproducible and controlled drug release in production, which is essential if adequate bioavailability is to be attained.
