Abstract
The content analysis of United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) Dispensing Information (DI), Volume II, Advice for the Patient is described. The analysis on the 5.2 megabyte database was performed in a personal computer environment. Our objectives were to locate and identify all visualizable concepts in USP DI, Advice for the Patient, and tabulate the frequency and specific location of all visualizable concepts. The database contained 686,581 total words and 7,938 unique, unfragmented words. Of these unique words, 2,866 were identified as visualizable. We estimate that USP DI Advice for the Patient contains 15,820 visualizable concepts or 5.52 visualizable concepts to 1 visualizable word. We also discuss the value of content analysis in developing a visual database and in identifying opportunities for standardization and data compression
