A description is presented of a pragmatically developed drug effects dictionary used by the Regulatory Affairs department of Merck, Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories. This dictionary utilizes the capabilities of a large multipurpose thesaurus system for such functions as terminology organization and query support. When compared to COSTART and WHO ART, the MSDRL dictionary is more specific in the representation of many analogous concepts.
