Abstract
The use of structured techniques in large-scale systems development is widely accepted. However, the simple adoption of structured analysis, design, programming, and testing methods does not ensure success in and of itself The use of structured analysis especially entails heavy end-user commitment and frequent feedback. Without this involvement, the structured approach offers little advantage over classical software development strategies. The objective of this article is to present a team approach to the structured development of a new distributed information system. The specific application involved automation of the Drug Safety Evaluation (DSE) Division at Ortho Pharmaceutical Corporation. However, we feel that the problems experienced and the solutions proposed are applicable to a wide range of software development projects.
