Abstract
Alan Neely, H. Wayne Pipkin, and Wilbert R. Shenk have launched a remarkable series, “The Christian Mission and Modern Culture,” which contributes extensively to the advancement of the field of missiology for the third millennium. This article reviews the authors' analysis of modern culture and their missional responses. Common to each book is a rigorous self-critique of Western culture and Christianity. In facing the altered role of the church and mission in the post-Christendom era, the series (1) examines modern/postmodern culture from a missional perspective; (2) develops theological models for the recovery of the integrity of the church; and (3) investigates new conceptualizations of the nature and mission of the church.
