Contemporary missiology needs to work through images as much as conceptual theories. Appropriate imagery has the potential to combine clarity and openness, to bring together global and local dimensions of mission. The imagery of displacement is a fruitful one to explore. It offers, as such imagery must, scriptural richness; contemporary relevance; linkage to other areas of theology and practice; fertility and flexibility; emotive as well as intellectual appeal; continuity with the tradition as well as new directions for the future; and possibilities for transcending traditional missiological disagreements.
