A distinction must be made between “missionary encyclopedias” (connected with mission as subject matter) and “missiological encyclopedias” (connected with mission studies as a discipline). The encyclopedia under consideration belongs to the latter category. It deals with the names, concepts, methods, and branches of missiology. Each of its three branches—the philosophy, the science, and the theology of mission—is subdivided in sections. This encyclopedia explains missiology as a discipline and all its branches and sections systematically and, at the same time, historically. All (general) historical developments in mission studies since Schleiermacher are taken into account.
