Because first-class missiologists keep abreast of the historical dimensions of the church's mission, they tend to make more sense than most when they evaluate “things as they are” today or guide us in reflecting on mission tomorrow. Dean Covell is one of these! His persistent investigations into 19th century mission history have already put us all in his debt. His biographical study of W. A. P. Martin (1827–1916), one of America's “pioneers for progress in China” (Eerdmans 1978), is a solid refutation to those who see only blunders and arrogance in American past missionary service in China. And Covell still keeps researching! A recent sabbatical took him to Britain. This article tells us what he found.
