Abstract
The phenomenon of the myriad schisms which have produced thousands of new Christian churches in Africa is made understandable by this sketch of the microcosm of Kisumu. Dr. Groot describes how Christianity was implanted here by the missionary movement which accompanied colonialism. These churches especially met the needs of the new urban areas. When political freedom from colonial powers was established, it seemed only natural that independent church movements would proliferate. In fact these are the churches flourishing today.
