Abstract
The sacrament of baptism is accepted as one of the great symbolic ceremonies by both the Western and the African churches. Within the African Independent Churches baptism is joyously received, deeply beloved, enhanced for their members by the respect for water and the rites of cleansing inherited from their traditional African faiths. Complete immersion is the generally accepted form.
