Abstract
Diang was the first Gbaya dance festival, and provided young boys with their first formal introduction to discipline and endurance. It was performed at the beginning of the rainy season for boys six to eight years of age. This dance was a celebration of the creation of the social order. The author describes the rites and cites a number of the songs used with them.
