Abstract
The Shirishana are one of many tribes which arrange marriages for young people, without always securing the consent of the prospective partners. The author argues that such a pattern should not be interfered with, as it is functional and leads to family stability among the Shirishana, whereas Western patterns of mate selection would lead to social disintegration. The Shirishana pattern in no way precludes the development of genuine conjugal love.
