Abstract
The meaning of music in different societies, its cultural setting and function, and some of the different kinds of musical structure to be found, are some of the subjects which Mrs. Key has chosen for discussion. An indigenous hymnody is closely intertwined with all of these factors. Mrs. Key's discussion is taken primarily from “tribal” situations but her principles are much more widely applicable. Her questions concerning the cultural function of music in a society may well be asked all over the world.
