Taking Scotland as a case study, this article recognizes the extent to which the people of historically Christian European nations have ceased to practice the faith. The values of European societies have been shaped by centuries of Christian influence, yet there is need for churches to embrace the challenge of offering social witness from a much more peripheral position. The authenticity of such witness is expressed less by words than by action: doing the truth. Worldwide missionary experience can help equip the churches to cross this new frontier. Key to the task is the formation of vital Christian community.
