Abstract
“It is the work of the Spirit,” Martin Luther wrote, “to make the church.” In this presidential address in the context of the American Society of Missiology's annual meeting theme, “From Asusa Street to the Ends of the Earth,” Stephen Bevans attempts to “unpack” Luther's phrase by reflecting on the image of the church as the creation of the spirit in terms of a missionary image: (1) the Spirit calls the church to be a missionary church; (2) the Spirit equips the church to be a missionary church; and (3) the Spirit challenges the church to be a missionary church.
