This exegetical study explores the great commission as a post-resurrection declaration of God's universal reign. It gives particular attention to the phrase, “teaching them to obey all things I have commanded you,” which is often ignored by interpreters and practitioners of the great commission. This phrase provides the content of what is to be passed on to others in the process of discipleship. It is a safeguard built into the mission mandate which protects disciples through the ages from the narrowing of the broad scope of mission, which like every Christian task, must hinge on the motives of love and authenticity.
