This article proposes a phenomenological model of therapeutic exorcism of demons for dissociative identity disorder by using the patient's view of perceived demons and empowering them to use their own spirituality to expel them. The history and literature is reviewed that shows potential negative and positive therapeutic results of exorcism. It is postulated that positive outcomes may occur by using noncoercive methods, understanding dissociative dynamics, and using the patient's own world view. The distinction between alter versus demon is left to the patient. Two short case studies are presented as well as a discussion of ethical and legal issues.
