Abstract
Based on exemplary papers presented at the “International Conference on Social and Health Effects of Different Drinking Patterns,” characteristics of current research on patterns of drinking and harm are presented. These characteristics include a new focus on such outcomes as social harms, benefits and casualties, and better conceptualization and measurement of patterns. A conceptual scheme for future research is proposed to integrate the various elements of current patterns of research. Areas for future investigation are identified.
