Abstract
This article discusses how researchers prepared themselves for a qualitative research project which focused on stakeholders' perceptions regarding the quality of care at a clinic for treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). While any type of interactive qualitative research would benefit from the researchers' preparing themselves, a sensitive topic such as this poses particular challenges and made researcher preparation quite imperative. The preparation period is described and illustrated, and related to theoretical concepts used by qualitative researchers and methodologists. It is hoped that the article will provide guidelines and inspiration for researchers who want to prepare for a qualitative investigation into similar sensitive topics. In preparation for this investigation, the researchers examined their own frames of reference, looked critically at their attitudes and tried to master appropriate capacities and skills. The following areas of researcher development are expanded upon: Creating an environment for introspection and reflection within the research team; personal preparation through diaries and memos; developing empathy for respondents; and training in research techniques.
